The Aronia Nero is a variety specially bred for fruit cultivation: its berries are larger than those of other aronia varieties, firm, and thus ideal for further processing. The taste is very fruity, full-bodied, and intense, with a steady and reliable yield.

Character & Growth

The Aronia Nero adapts well to its location, thrives on almost all soil types, and tolerates temperatures down to −30 °C. It grows calmly and evenly, is undemanding, robust, and resistant, as well as insensitive to pests and pathogens. Pruning requirements are minimal, and fertilisation is only necessary if needed.

How to plant and care for Aronia Nero

Choose a sunny location, as this helps the berries ripen better and become more aromatic. Avoid waterlogging and compensate for dry periods with sufficient water. Loosen heavy clay soils with light gravel, improve pure sandy soils with humus; fertilise exclusively organically (e.g. Bokashi +400) and use bark mulch sparingly to avoid unnecessarily compacting the soil (oxygen supply). In the first two years, a formative pruning promotes growth; in subsequent years, rejuvenation pruning is sufficient if needed. During harvest time, nets keep birds away from the berries. Stretch these all the way to the ground to avoid injury to the animals.
